the Company for the sum of £850 damages and succeeeded after

much delay and considerable expense in getting him to obtain

a writ on Christmas Eve, I acoompnying him to the Law Courts

for the purpose.

The Company had by this time closed their offices

in London and gone to New York, at which place the writ had to

be served.

Pending the serving of the writ I had made application

for an appointment in Nigeria, and this was given me at a

salary of £480 per annum with a Bonus of Two Pounds per month

for good conduct( which incidentally I received). I asked

my solicitor whether I should be in order in accepting this

post, pointing out that it would be possible if he cabled ne

the date fixed for the hearing of the care to obtain three

months leave of absence to attend, and I was assured by him

that this course would be quite in order.

I proceeded to igeria and remained there a very con-

siderable time, until invalided with Rheumatism on Melaria;

and I may mention that even to the day o leaving I was not

absent from my duty for a single hour. I left there on a

Sunday.

On my return to England, I was for some months an

inmate of Greenwich Hospital, and as soon as I was able to

leave this Institution, I hastened to the Solicitor from whom
